Ohio Valley YMCA Expands to the Outdoors
New YMCA Location
The Ohio Valley YMCA has recently acquired the beautiful camp site along Beaver Creek State Park, previously known as the Beaver Creek Presbyterian Church Camp, through a donation from the Presbyterian churches in the Upper Ohio Valley. The donation comes as part of a partnership between the Presbyterian churches and the YMCA, allowing the churches to continue utilizing the site for church camp for decades to come.
Documents to finalize the property transfer were signed on March 17th at the Calcutta YMCA. Reverend Gene Toot was among the representatives of the Beaver Creek Presbyterian Church Camp that came to witness the closing of the donation of the camp property to the Ohio Valley YMCA. Rev. Toot served on the Board of the church camp for 63 years and was a key supporter of the new partnership with the YMCA. Other representatives included Board President the Rev. Steve Cramer, Secretary of the Camp Jo Sollick and board member Roger Sollick. Those representing the YMCA were CEO Rob O’Hara and Programs Director Maggie Shemasek.
The YMCA has committed to long term development of camp facilities and preservation of the camp. Initial plans for the new Outdoor YMCA at Beaver Creek include a variety of uses including outdoor recreation and education, residence camping, event and gathering spaces, and access to an outdoor pool, waterfront, and trails. The Outdoor YMCA will open opportunities for additional denominations to use the site for church camp and gives the community as a whole the opportunity to explore nature and enjoy a piece of the beautiful Beaver Creek.
