Youth Development

Empowering young people to reach their full potential

We believe that positive activities and influences from an early age help young people reach their full potential, so they can grow into thriving adults.

Child Watch

Our Y provides free supervision of children 1-8 years old for members participating in YMCA classes or programs for a maximum of 2 hours a day. Parents must remain in the building during this time. All children under the age of 8 are required to be placed in Child Watch if the child is not under the direct supervision of an adult. This program is temporarily unavailable due to Covid-19.

Youth Sports - Drills & Skills

We offer a variety of sports programs for area youth throughout the year that focus on skills, quality game play, sportsmanship and teamwork.

Swim Lessons

Swimming is a life skill as well as great exercise and a challenging sport. The Calcutta YMCA offers swim lessons for children ages 6 months, all the way to intermediate adult swimmers, as well as  many kinds of adaptive swim programs for kids with special needs, so we can all safely enjoy the pleasures of an aquatic environment.

Wave Runners

The Calcutta YMCA's competitive youth swim team, the Wave Runners, take to the pool each winter and face off against other youth swim teams from around the tri-state area. Swimmers ages 7 to 18 can register for to become a Wave Runner in the fall.

Safety Around Water

Through Safety Around Water, parents and caregivers are encouraged to help their children learn fundamental water safety and swimming skills. During the course, children will learn how to respond if they find themselves in unexpected water situations -- from how to reach the water's surface if they submerge to safely reaching a pool's edge or exiting any body of water. In addition to learning lifesaving water safety skills, children can increase their physical activity by swimming. Swimming also motivates children to strive for self-improvement, teaches goal orientation and cultivates a positive mental attitude and high self-esteem. It also teaches life lessons of sport and sportsmanship, so that children can learn how to work well with teammates and coaches and how to deal with winning and losing.

Teen Strength Certification

Teen Strength Certification is designed to introduce YMCA members ages 12 to 15 to basic strength training principles and techniques. Teen Strength Certification must be successfully completed before teen members are allowed to utilize the YMCA Wellness Center. Once the certification is completed, a guardian must accompany the teen member while they use the Wellness Center. Teen Strength Certified members are subject to restricted hours for Wellness Center use.
